ART AND HISTORY IN CONTEMPORANEITY: POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS This project, which had its title altered since 2009, previously called History and Art in Modern and Contemporary Brazil, and had certain critical perspectives established as well, proposes to make an investigation about history of art produced in Brazil in the last fifteen years. It intends to evaluate a sample of this production on a speculative level, starting from the premise that history of art, but above all the one which proposes to historify modern and contemporary art, constitutes a field of knowledge which implies interdependence of art history, artistic theory, and art criticism. The proposed survey shall be effected, initially, through the data bank of universities which have postgraduate programs in the area of Arts, History of Art or History, as well as those which have lines of research on History of Art or some line of research in which History of Art has a transversal relation. Thus, we shall consider as a priority the programs of Arts and History of Art, but also those of History, Architecture and Communications whose theses present those characteristics. As investigative presupposition, which shall orient not only the selection of the sample, but also the theoretical reflection, it is verified that, as well as art, history of art constitutes today a field of knowledge whose interrogations are concentrated on guarantee of the specificity of artistic production, but point to many and varied areas of knowledge, requiring, then, an interdisciplinary, or hybrid, historiographic methodology. It starts, also, from the principle that this production, which conjugates art history, theory and criticism, must have as its project to be mediated by discussion on the place of history of art, on the possibility of criticism, and on the function of theory in the making of art. Such discussion reveals itself aggravated by the identification of the death of productive processes from modern tradition and by the attempt of reposition of artistic procedures, which always require a producing action. The research project, therefore, investigates the presence of the relation between history, theory and criticism in this Brazilian contemporary historiographic production, which implies the rethinking of history after the announcement of the death of art, but also the verification of its resistance. The project “Art and politics: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Spain”, involved in the investigation, whose objective is to analyze the relation between new contemporary artistic behaviors and political conditions and actions, involves professors Aurora Fernández Polanco, Josu Larrañaga and Tonia Raquejo, from the Complutense University of Madrid; from the University of Valencia, professors Juan Vicente Aliaga and José Miguel Cortés; from the University of León, Javier Hernando; by the National University of Distance Education, from Madrid, Sagrario Aznar; the University of Playa Ancha, in Chile, participates with professors Justo Pastor Mellado, Alberto Madrid and José de Nordenflycht; the University of Buenos Aires, with Diana Wechsler and Teresa Constantin; Rio de Janeiro State University, with Sheila Cabo Geraldo, and the University of São Paulo, with Daria Jaremtchuk. The project intends to analyze the position of new artistic behaviors with respect to a redefinition produced in the concept of politics.
